In an age of mobile games, hand-held tablets and 24X7 television it is not surprising that many children are addicted to these electronic devices and miss out on much-needed exercise. These, along with unhealthy eating habits, often wreak havoc on their health. As a parent, you can get your children interested in health and fitness from a young age. Here are a few things that you can do right away.

Practice what you preach

If you lead a healthy lifestyle, your children will emulate you and develop an interest in health and fitness. The opposite happens when your child sees you binging on unhealthy snacks and leading a sedentary lifestyle. If you become your child’s health and fitness role model, by taking up physical activities like jogging or participating in any sport, he or she would be inspired to emulate you and even join you.

It makes a lot of sense to make the right food choices and incorporate fitness into your lifestyle. This will surely make your child get interested in it from a young age. You can try and make exercise and physical activities a family activity whether it is an after-dinner walk, gardening or hiking.

Keep children active

The more active your child is, the fitter he or she will be. At home, encourage the child to do small chores. Give the children lots of free time to play physical sports with their friends. You need not restrict yourself only to sports. There are great activities like dancing or martial arts.

Every child is different. Allow your child to experiment with different activities appropriate for their age. Eventually, they will find something they really enjoy. Make it a point to compliment your children when they progress or excel in any physical activity.

Even as you encourage physical activities, try to smartly restrict sedentary activities like watching TV, computer surfing or video games. Do make it a point to encourage the children to engage in various physical activities at school too. Even daily activities like taking the stairs instead of an elevator, walking to the supermarket and doing errands will go a long way in keeping your children fit.

Develop a routine

Plan your child’s day in a manner that he or she gets enough time for school, homework, games, watching TV, sleeping and other activities. Having meals at set times and going to bed on time is essential for their health. Create an exercise plan and make it an integral part of his or her routine so that your child knows it is as important as any other activity. The idea is that your child should realise that it is something that is non-negotiable.

Health and fitness are not one-off items but need to be an integral part of one’s lifestyle. Getting your children interested in health and fitness at an early age will help build the foundations of a healthy future.
